“Acadian Survival” draws inspiration from the rural traditions of Cajun Mardi Gras in south Louisiana. Unlike the large parades of New Orleans, the courir de Mardi Gras is a centuries-old folk ritual rooted in the Acadian communities of the region.

Participants wear elaborate handmade costumes and masks, traveling from house to house on horseback while gathering ingredients for a communal gumbo. One of the most recognizable traditions involves chasing and capturing a rooster — a symbolic gesture that reflects both humor and endurance within the celebration.

In this painting, the masked figure holding the rooster becomes the visual center of the scene, surrounded by the vibrant textures and colors of traditional Mardi Gras costume. The work reflects both the theatricality of the event and the deeper persistence of Cajun cultural identity.
